Best Practices for 1:1s

Posted on July 12, 2023July 14, 2023 by admin

According to research from Gallup, employees who have regular 1:1 meetings with their managers are three times more likely to feel engaged in their company and thrive at their job! To make the most out of these meetings, here are some best practices to follow:

📝 Prepare and set an agenda: It’s essential for both managers and employees to come prepared with specific topics, questions, or updates to discuss during the meeting. Having a clear agenda ensures that time is used efficiently and that important matters are addressed.

🚫 Avoid cancellations: Frequent cancellations of 1:1 meetings can demoralize your employees by making them feel like they are not a priority. If you must cancel, Harvard suggests rescheduling the meeting for the same week or shortening its duration. Some time together is better than no time at all!

📆 Meet weekly: Research suggests that meeting on a weekly basis is the best cadence for 1:1s. According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, employees need to feel safe at work before they can perform at their best. The best way to meet this need is by providing constant opportunities to meet with leadership.

🎖️ Feedback and recognition: 1:1s are an excellent opportunity for providing constructive feedback and recognition. Managers should offer timely feedback, acknowledge achievements, and provide guidance for improvement.

👂 Active listening and empathy: Managers should actively listen to their employees, demonstrating genuine interest and empathy. This fosters a supportive environment where employees feel comfortable sharing their thoughts, concerns, and ideas.
